Observation of Non-classical Rotational Inertia in Solid Helium - an Indication of Superflow in Solids?

چکیده

The phenomenon of Non-Classical Rotational Inertia, in which a body does not rotate with its rotating container, has been recently observed in solid Helium-4. This property is shared by superfluid liquid helium. The recent findings might be evidence of superflow in solids. Superfluidity or flow sans dissipation is commonly associated with liquids. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, quantum mechanics allows for a solid to exhibit superflow too. ∗e-mail: [email protected]

Observation of superflow in solid helium.

We report on the observation of nonclassical rotational inertia in solid helium-4 confined to an annular channel in a sample cell under torsional motion, demonstrating superfluid behavior. The effect shows up as a drop in the resonant oscillation period as the sample cell is cooled below 230 millikelvin. Measurement of 17 solid samples allows us to map out the boundary of this superfluid-like s...

Classical rotational inertia of solid 4He.

The observation of reduced rotational inertia in a cell containing solid 4He has been interpreted as evidence for superfluidity of the solid. We propose an alternative explanation: slippage of the solid, due to grain boundary premelting between the solid and dense adsorbed layers at the container wall. We calculate the range of film thickness, and determine the viscosity that will account for t...

Momentum deficit in quantum glasses

Using the concept of tunneling two level systems we explain the reduction of rotational inertia of disordered solid He observed in the torsional oscillator experiments. The key point is a peculiar quantum phenomenon of momentum deficit for two level systems in moving solids. We show that an unusual state which is essentially different from both normal and superfluid solid states can be realized...

Supersolid and the non-uniform superfluid

We construct a model of non-uniform superfluid having a spatially modulated order parameter that makes it kinematically an x-ray solid, but one with an associated superfluid flow. In the mean field approximation, such a supersolid is found to be energetically stabilized by self-interaction favouring a density wave. Intrinsic to this state is a non-classical translational inertia which we derive...

Supersolid and the Non-uniform Condensate

We construct a model of non-uniform condensate having a spatially modulated complex order parameter that makes it kinematically an x-ray solid, i.e., a real mass density wave, but one admitting an associated superfluid flow. Intrinsic to this state is a non-classical translational inertia which we derive for the case of a potential flow. Connection to the non-classical rotational inertia observ...
